In general, our regular-sized entrees are about 400 calories and our large are about 550 calories. Our cold entrees only come in regular sizes.
When we design our recipes, we base our portion sizes on the USDA Recommended Daily Allowances and Guidelines for Healthy Lunches. Our regular portion is for Preschool through 5th-grade students while our large is geared for 6th grade through high school students, but these portions are smaller than what they would like for some students.
The large portion is not a 'double' lunch. We increase the protein portion (such as chicken and beef) of the meal by about 33-50% in the large portions. The carbohydrate portion of the meal usually stays the same, but one exception is the pasta entrees, which usually have an additional 4 oz (volume) of cooked pasta.
The only item where the child receives a double portion is the pizza, where a regular portion is one slice and a large portion is two slices. Please remember all lunches also include the choice of sides, fruit or vegetables, and a beverage, and are not included in the nutrition information for the lunches.
